There is a need to take forward the Open Access movement in India and especially the scientists/scholars working in the institutions in National Agricultural Research System (NARS) should be made aware of what is Open Access (OA) and what are its benefits and how to make their research literature as OA literature.

The efforts on making OA to literature in NARS is at very minimal. Under various projects, now NARS is learning what is OA however it is contained among the principal research investigators of those projects. Under National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), under component 1, OA initiatives are taken up viz., e-Granth, OpenAgri, Eprints@IARI. However, the Eprints@CMFRI is sloely because of the efforts of librarians.

It is requested that all those from NARS (India) who are gathering here on this site to celebrate Open Access Week, to conduct at least one-hour activity in their respective institutions on OA.

Please see the institutional repositories at following links

IARI Eprints@IARI http://eprints.iari.res.in
CMFRI EPrints@CMFRI http://eprints.cmfri.org.in

Centralized repository at following link

OpenAgri http://agropedia.iitk.ac.in/openaccess/

We need to create more such repositories in NARS. For any help, please contact us at

Subbiah Arunachalum has lead the composition of a letter to CGIAR managemnent regarding the need to make all CGIAR organisations adopt OA policies. For details of the letter, see EPT Blog. Also, EPT is requesting 'OA stories' for OA week that show how making articles OA has lead to specific developments in research or for the authors themselves, see . These initaitives are important for the support of agricultural research and application in India.
