OPERAS

Background: OPERAS, a research infrastructure to support open scholarly communication in the social sciences and humanities in Europe, was incorporated in 2020. The association was established to address the fragmented transition to open science in the European Research Area (ERA)—a single market for research, innovation and technology.

Mission: OPERAS works to coordinate and federate resources to efficiently address the scholarly communication needs of European social science and humanities researchers. It is a distributed infrastructure that aims to make open science a reality for scholars in the field and create a communication system where knowledge is produced to benefit the public worldwide without barriers. OPERAS unlocks scholarly communication resources and enables the whole field to reinvent itself in the new Open Science paradigm.

Community over Commercialization:

“An important topic we are currently working on is the development of the open diamond open access model. We try to support the sharing of tools, best practices and know-how in the community. The diamond open access model is a strong opportunity to put scholarly communication in the hands and under the control of the scientific community itself.”

– Pierre Mounier, OPERAS Co-coordinator (Community), Paris
